Compact Access With Stabilised Working
A spider lift combines a compact tracked chassis with a boom and stabiliser legs. Certain models can pass through restricted openings before deploying in a wider work area. Applications include inspecting high internal spaces, maintaining building façades and accessing awkward courtyards at commercial premises.
Describe the entire journey from the delivery vehicle to the set-up point. A narrow gate is only one constraint. Turns, steps, overhead clearances and the length of the machine can prevent passage even when the published width appears suitable.
Stowed Size And Deployed Footprint
Transport dimensions describe the machine while travelling or being delivered. Operating dimensions describe the space needed once its stabilisers and boom are positioned. Both need checking, and reduced stabiliser configurations may change the usable reach or capacity where the manufacturer permits them.
Send a measured plan of the proposed standing area, including walls, planting, drains and access doors. Keep emergency exits and escape routes usable. If several positions are needed to complete the work, each position needs a safe route and a separate check of ground conditions.
Surface Loads And Protection
Tracks can help distribute travelling loads, but a spider lift is not automatically suitable for every floor or landscape surface. During operation the stabilisers can apply concentrated loads. Ground bearing strength and the correct spreader arrangements must be assessed for the actual machine and site.
For stone paving, finished floors or suspended slabs, discuss protection and structural limits with the property team. Protective sheets may prevent marking but do not make a weak surface structurally adequate. Provide drawings or load restrictions where available so specialist advice can be obtained before delivery.
Indoor Work And Building Constraints
Atriums and covered courtyards may need electric operation or another approved low-emission arrangement. Discuss power supply, cable routing and any restrictions imposed by the building manager. Check ventilation and charging requirements rather than assuming a compact machine is designed for indoor use.
Overhead glazing, roof beams and suspended services can create trapping or collision hazards. Plan the boom movement and basket position throughout the task. Staff and visitors need to remain outside the operating zone, particularly where the access route crosses an occupied building.
What Affects Spider Lift Hire Cost
The required working envelope, entrance dimensions and operating surface can narrow the available models. Delivery distance, the unloading point, hire period and any operator requirement all affect the quote. A pre-hire assessment may be useful where access measurements or floor loading are uncertain.
Include unusual steps, tight corners and restricted delivery hours at the enquiry stage. Ask the supplier to identify the exact model, stabiliser arrangement and power requirements proposed. Confirm transport and collection costs, site preparation responsibilities and any conditions affecting movement through the building.
UK Duties And Safe Use
The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require suitable planning, supervision and competence where work at height is involved. PUWER 1998 covers suitability, maintenance and training for work equipment.
LOLER 1998 adds duties for lifting operations and examination. Agree who plans, supervises and carries out each part of the work. Equipment hire does not transfer all site responsibilities to a supplier.
For equipment-specific advice, read the HSE MEWP safety guidance. The final selection and safe system of work must reflect your site and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Planning Your Hire
Measure Every Restriction
Record entrance width, overhead clearance, turning space and any change in level from unloading point to work area.
Assess The Set-Up
Check deployed stabiliser spread, support loads and the required basket position. Confirm surface protection and structural advice where needed.
Plan Delivery And Use
Agree unloading, internal segregation, power arrangements and rescue procedures. Check the final model against the measurements before booking.
Spider Lift Hire Questions
Will A Spider Lift Clear My Bristol Building’s Entrance?
A spider lift may fit through a narrow doorway if its stowed width and height are suitable. Check the exact model and the whole route, including turns and thresholds. The area beyond the doorway must also accommodate its deployed stabilisers and safe working envelope, so entrance width alone is not enough.
Will A Spider Lift Damage A Finished Floor?
Spider lift floor protection needs to address marking and structural loading separately. Tracks and mats may reduce surface damage, but the machine weight and stabiliser reactions still need assessment. Ask for model-specific loads and obtain suitable approval for the floor before arranging access through a finished commercial building.
